Mason Biology SMSC Scholarship

Undergraduate Award Application

The Department of Biology is pleased to announce a scholarship program for undergraduates who enroll in the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation (SMSC).

The Department of Biology will provide two scholarships for up to $5,000 in individual support, applicable to tuition, room and board, to support students in SMSC’s prestigious academic and field programs in conservation biology.  These pilot scholarship awards will be made to students enrolled in the Smithsonian-Mason Semester in fall 2017 or spring 2018. Scholarship support will be awarded to qualified students who aspire to work in applied conservation and resource management and who seek to expand their knowledge and academic preparation to meet the biodiversity conservation needs of today and tomorrow.


The Scholarship is limited to students who have already been accepted into the program, for the semester in which the scholarship would be awarded. Other eligibility requirements include:

  1. Majoring in Biology at George Mason University
  2. Submission of the required application and supporting materials
  3. Written acceptance of scholarship and enrollment deposit ($500) to be made within three business days of award notification.

The scholarship awardee(s) for spring 2018 will be announced on October 20, 2017. All applicants will also be informed of their scholarship status by email.

Biology Scholarship for SMSC Semester

The Biology Department at George Mason University is pleased to announce the establishment of the Smithsonian Mason School of Conservation Scholarship Program. The scholarship will provide funding for Biology majors at George Mason to attend the Smithsonian Mason School of Conservation semester program. All George Mason University biology majors who have been accepted into the Smithsonian Mason School of Conservation undergraduate semester program are invited to apply for this special award of up to $5,000 to apply towards tuition and program costs. This application and all supporting documents are due by 11:59pm on October 12, 2017.

    YOU MAY BE ASKED TO PRESENT ORIGINALS. Please submit scans of two letters of recommendations, preferably in PDF format. We highly recommend you request recommendations from people who can attest to your personal character and to your potential for academic success at SMSC. At least one recommendation should be completed by a current or former professor or school-based official.
