Dr. Gillevet has been a Professor at George Mason University since 1996 and is Director of the Microbiome Analysis Center (MBAC). The MBAC focuses on using state of the art molecular techniques to study problems in Molecular Ecology, Molecular Evolution, and Microbial Ecology. Prior to joining Mason, he worked in molecular evolution projects as a Post Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from 1982 to 1988. He was the Technical Director of the Center for Prokaryotic Genome Analysis at the University of Illinois from 1988 to 1990. He was the Director of the Harvard Genome Laboratory at Harvard University from 1990 to 1993 that focused on the sequencing of Mycoplasma capricolum. He established an integrated sequencing facility at the National Center for Human Genome Research from 1993 to 1996. He teaches courses in Molecular Ecology, Molecular Evolution, and Bioinformatics.
