The STEM Accelerator is currently accepting applications for Learning Assistants for Spring 2017. Learning Assistants (LAs) are undergraduates in the College of Science who are interested in unique educational opportunities such as participation in undergraduate instruction, course innovation, peer-to-peer tutoring and the chance to work closely with COS faculty.

What does an LA do?
LAs will work with undergraduate students in your course to help them develop a deeper understanding of the important concepts and connections inherent in the course material they are studying. LAs work with students either individually in office hours or in small groups, like review sessions. LAs will be trained to ask questions that promote student discourse and that uncover student thinking and student misconceptions. If you are teaching in the ALT classroom in EXPL, you are especially encouraged to request an LA.

How do I request an LA?
You can request an LA for an undergraduate course you will be teaching in Spring 2017 using the new form here:
If you have a particular student in mind who would make a great LA for your course, please encourage them to apply. Both student and faculty must apply for a position. If you don’t have a student in mind, I will send you a list of students to interview after the deadline.

What are the deadlines for applying?
Faculty Deadline: November 11, 2016
Student Deadline: November 18, 2016
These deadlines are firm and decisions will be made based upon funding and demand in mid-November. Notifications will be sent in December 2016.

How can I learn more?
Come to an LA Info Session to ask questions and hear from current LAs and Accelerator faculty about the program.
