Dr. Madden has been an instructional faculty member here at GMU since the fall semester of 2007. He currently teaches several courses within the biology program, does academic advising, and serves as the course coordinator for the cell structure and function course or BIOL 213. Prior to joining the Department of Biology at GMU, Dr. Madden taught courses at local community colleges as well as Marymount and Shenandoah Universities. Dr. Madden received his PhD in biochemistry from Louisiana State University. His doctoral dissertation focused on the molecular genetics of an equine retrovirus and prior to moving to the state of Virginia, he was an assistant professor of research at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston where he spent approximately 8 years studying the life cycle of the hepatitis B virus and the causes of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis or fatty liver disease. Although he has taught a wide range of scientific subjects, his primary interests are in the fields of molecular biology, microbiology, and virology.
